I’m talking about a really good one. A performance you will remember until the end of time. It’s different for different people but usually looks something like this. The musicians are perfectly synced up to each other, playing deep in the pocket. They dont have to make eye contact, they communicate through subtle guitar riffs, drum syncopations, and a grooving base line. Something is happening. You’re looking hard into the stage from your nosebleed seats, and suddenly, you feel drawn into the middle of the performance. Your mouth is dropping and an overwhelming feeling of paralyses take over you. You remain still in fear of disrupting that moment. You’ve never felt more in tune with your environment or more fulfilled than you do now. Just before you realize whats happening, the moment is gone. You will do anything you can to get that unexpected, fleeting moment again. Musicians are familiar with this feeling, so too, are high performing members in cross functional teams. Each player with their own expertise, working together to converge on a single goal. I know this because I’ve experienced it, and I live to make this happen as often as I can. Players pushing eachother to perform their best work and coming together to create a product well beyond their owns expectations.
